On a more electronic measurement, although this can be done by a blood test to measure the blood oxygen level in the body or the oxygen saturation of a patients blood; a pulse oximetry meter is used by placing a probe on a patients finger. The pulse oximetry meter measurers oxygenation in the blood through the skin. The pulse oximetry meter does not measure carbon dioxide or CO2 in the blood. Carbon dioxide is a crucial indicator in a persons breathing rate. Carbon dioxide also regulates the bloods pH. If a persons breathing is too slow it causes respirtatory acidosis(hypoventilation) if it is too fast it causes respiratory alkalosis(hyperventilation). Pulse oximetry does not measure the ventilation rate at which carbon dioxide is ventilated or leaving the lungs to prevent hypoventilation, It also does not provide true or accurate blood oxygen levels of a persons oxygen level if they are using oxygen externally or are on oxygen white they are having a pulse oximetry done on them. This is because the pulse oximetry meter is unable to determine if a person is breathing on their own or if they are being assisted with oxygen. If a person has a disease or illness of the lungs, it may go undetected because the pulse oximetry meter is unable to meaure for carbon dioxide levels or the ventilation rate of it as it leaves the lungs. So it therefore, may not be able to detect labored breathing and thus the pulse oximetry meter may provide a false positive result. I knew there was something wrong I just couldn't put my finger on it.
Anyway's the, vitals machine is commonly used in hospitals, clinics and even doctor's offices. Where ever you have a patient these meters or machines may be used. The one thing that needs to be included as a vital accessory is a way to measure breathing sounds. You may say if the vitals machine can't even give an accurate pulse oximetry of a person, then why use it in the first place? Well, once some inventor is able to perfect a meter of measurement that can externally measure the bicarbonate ion rate in the body, then we can all breathe a lot easier with this thing.
The stethoscope is used to listen to the heart, lung and blood flow sounds. If an electronic stethoscope were a part of the vitals machine package then, the RN, LPN, nursing assistant or whoever they send to do the job can just turn the vitals machine on and make sure it's plugged in and the stethoscope portion of the vitals machine will provide by readout, if the heart has the sound pattern of normal- which means the patient can go home. If the heart has the sounds of rales:bubbling and crackling,rhonci or fluid sounds and other auscultations and heart defect sounds like heart murmurs which can be dectected by the sound pattern of the heart,this may mean that they have to stay at the hospital. By including the electronic stethoscope in the vitals machine package, ailments like pneumonia can be detected without someone up off the street doing somebody elses job!
