Lactobacillus is part of the lactic acid group of bacteria, since the lactose is converted to lactic acid. Because lactic acid produces an acid environment, this inhibits harmful bacteria from growing. Lactobacillus is also stated as having anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and anti-cancer effects as it is able to seperate the epithelium from pathogens that may invade the body.
It is imperative to have the proper balance of lactobacillus in the body so that it can defend itself against harmful bacteria. This means that one must have an adequate amount of acidity in the body to prevent the spread of disease.
Unfortunately, lactobacillus is a bacteria responsible for dental cavities or tooth decay. This is because the mineral content in the teeth becomes affected by the increase of acid or low pH. Fluoride or fluoride ions prevents such decay by providing remineralization of tooth enamel. Since fluoride reduces demineralization in tooth enamel it slows the rate in which cavities and tooth decay occur.
Fluoride exists in our water and subsequently has an effect on our total health as it is used to clean and drink with.
