Epiglottitis is an inflamation of the epiglottis. This can be caused by a virus, bacteria or by the throat being scalded or by injury. Haemophilus Influenzae (H influenzae type B) is a primary reason for the cause of epligottitis along with other respiratory infections. Because the epiglottis can block the airway completely once inflamed or swollen it is a life threatening situation. In checking the throat even by using a tongue depressor that looks like an overgrown ice pop or ice cycle stick may cause furthur damage by irritation. So it may be best to be in a hospital and be examined by someone who can view the larynx and take a x-ray of the neck to determine the severity of inflamation of the epiglottis.
Prior to 1990 people were not vaccinated for Haemophilus Influenzae (Hib) as part of childhood vaccinations. Hib bacteria can live in the ears, mouth and throat; and cause bacterial meningitis and pneumonia. This of course can be passed along by coughing, sneezing or being in contact with someone who has(Hib). Aside from aggravating the throat by examination or going in for that x-ray; one can take a blood test by the same name of Haemophilus influenzae type b (IgG, IgA or IgM) antibody. This measures your anti-Hib IgG immunoglobulin (antibody) in the blood. For those of us who were children long before 1990 there are antibiotics that can be prescribed for sufferers of epiglottitis.
Since this is the situation, you may be wondering what is the purpose of this article?
Times are still not easy and to take off of work to see a physician may make you more vulnerable than you think. Bosses are not the most sympathetic people when it comes to their employees regarding illness. They get angry and then begin to think of how to hire that fresh face newbie to replace your ailing butt. My suggestion would be to put most of us out of our working misery and have mandatory retirement at ago 50, and make the attitude getting nonsense of the employer
the cost that the government must pay and I don't mean welfare ya'll! This means that since age affects us and it's no ones fault we can now receive a stipend to live on according to the "high" cost of living. Aw hell, and it may be just a suggestion on my part to open this up; since many of us have worked so diligently hard and have not received that ROI on things. But hey, this is America, so we say we can, we can, we can until we longer can anymore. Which means that we must remedy the inflamation, cause somehow we must keep going. This can be done by taking Ginger or Elderberry extract since these supplements can inhibit the growth of bacteria and viruses. Please bear in mind that Ginger should not be used if you are on Coumadin or Warfarin or have diabetes; so always consult your physician. Ginger may soothe an inflamed or swollen epiglottis until you are able to take the time to be properly examined and given medicine for it. In severe cases partial removal of the epiglottis (epiglottidectomy) can be performed to alleviate discomfort from obstructive sleep apnea or epiglottitis that causes a constant sore throat or painful swallowing and difficult breathing.
But then again, that side order of ginger along with that sushi paid for by the governments mandatory retirement plan may cure just about any ache or pain many of us in America have!
