Osteonecrosis of the bone is caused when there is not an adequate supply of blood to the bone. This leads to damage to the joints of the bone and many people suffer from arthritis type conditions. Osteonecrosis is also referred to as avascular necrosis and means bone death. This sound scary because they bones are the skeletal structure that holds the body together. Just like buildings need a way to stand by using solid materials to ensure that they don't float or move like kites in the wind, our bodies need the same structure so that we are able to move and withstand a certain weight by having a physical structure. Blood vessels supply the bones with all the nutrients they need to become strengthened and to re-grow(as old bone die new bone replaces it) and to repair it, as when a bone is broken. It is vital for blood vessels not to be ruptured in any way so that blood can be sent to the bone to be repaired. Medicines and sometimes medical problems or conditions cause osteonecrosis. These medications include steroid use and bisphosphonates. When illness also decreases blood supply to the bone osteonecrosis can also occur. Fat can actually get clogged inside the blood vessels of the bone, when people have problems with fat and their metabolism of it does not remove the fat effectively the fat can store itself inside the blood vessels of the bone and prevent blood from circulating. This is the same as when the arteries in the heart become clogged with fatty deposits of plaque that prevent the heart from beating properly due to inadequate blood and oxygen supply. When health problems or medications cause an increase in blood fats that eventually disrupt blood flow in the vessels of the bone osteonecrosis is the condition that causes the bones to die off because they are not receiving nutrients from the blood. High blood fats can also cause blood to clot or what is known as blood clots. A way to check for clotting is a blood test called D-dimer( mostly used for deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism evaluation). With the use of a D-dimer clot check blood meter test one can check and evaluate their fatty blood levels from home as they would their blood sugar. This is important as if glucose levels drop and diabetic shock becomes the result. When someone has to regulate their medications or medical condition it is just as important to make sure that high blood fats are not causing blood clotting and probably inside the blood vessels of bones that can cause osteonecrosis. It sounds like a lot to check once a day or even once a week, but this would be preventative in terms of not knowing and ending up in the hospital a lot longer. The D-dimer clot check blood meter test- so osteonecrosis won't have a bone to pick!
