The excitatory neurotransmitter system includes:
Epinephrine- necessary for adrenaline and metabolism, it is made from norepinephrine.
Glutamate- is the excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. It is necessary for memory and cognitive functions.
Norepinephrine- is the excitatory neurotransmitter that is made from the adrenal medulla or dopamine.
PEA- is an excitatory neurotransmitter made from phenylalnine. It is necessary for concentration.
Dopamine which also contributes to our muscle control and motivation and histamine plays a part in our allergic reactions and emotional well being.
Nerve cells send signals or messages to each other and release transmitters eg. glutamate. This signal is supposed to indicate to the neurotransmitter to trigger the release of glutamate from a pre-synaptic cell. Once this occurs the glutamate receptors bind the glutamate and are then activated. Glutamate transporters are found in the neuronal and glial membranes and remove glutamate from the extracellular space but when messages are overwhelming and not brief enough a problem arises in the immediate removal of glutamate, so that the nerve cell is able to function properly. This is crucial to the brains function, in that the amino acid known as glutamate must not accumulate in the brain for any length of time because it becomes toxic to the nerve cells. In brain damage or disease, glutamate can also accumulate outside the cells and result in calcium ions to enter the glutamate receptor cells as this is called calcium flooding. Calcium flooding can cause neuronal damage, excitotoxicity or cell death. Increased levels of glutamate causes alzheimers, autism, retardation and stroke. High levels can also contribute to depression and OCD disorders. Low levels of glutamate cause poor brain function.
Supplements such as vitamin B6, B12 and L-theanine or suntheanine may be of assistance regarding the effects of excess glutamate in the body. Always consult with a herbalist or physician if you are taking other medications. This is probably a lot less painful than enduring an exorcism for demonic possession of the mind, body and spirit!
