Many fruits contain antioxidants that fight off disease, toxins and help reduce the aging process. Because of this, fruits need to become more incorporated into the diets of people so that the body can properly rid itself of harmful toxins that can eventually lead to disease. This occurs by ridding the body of free radical that lead to oxidative stress or damage to the body. Cherries contain anthocyanins. Anthocyanins is an antioxidant, with pigments usually found in dark colored fruits eg. raspberry, blueberry. Anthocyanins are responsible for preventing degenerative diseases. They also improve brain function, and reduce inflammation in people who suffer from gout, osteoarthritis or osteoporosis. This antioxidant also prevents cardiovascular disease such as atherosclerosis.
The problem here is that extracts, other fruits and vegetables that are also antioxidants may contain oxalates. Oxalates are found in plants. As fruits and vegetables are grown from plants oxalates are the chemical compound that will occur in the fruit or vegetable. Some fruits such as berries are high in oxalates. When oxalates bind to calcium in the body they form crystals. This usually occurs in the urine. Citrate or lactic acid can eliminate the crystals in the urine or reduce the size of crystals found in the urine. When large amounts of calcium oxalates accumulate in the body and create crystals that are unable to pass through the kidney during urination, this is known as a kidney stone. Cherries are low in oxalates so they will not cause a person to develop kidney stones.
Since cherries are not available year round it would be nice to have a supplement that is free from oxalates. If a an extract of cherry anthocyanins were made as a supplement, one could rid their bodies of inflammation that causes osteoporosis, arthritis, heart disease and harmful toxins without the problems of developing kidney stones.
