Skin and muscle are destroyed because the bacteria releases toxins or exotoxins. This causes an over production of cytokines. Cytokines are signal cells. It is the cytokines that signal to the immune cells that include T-cells and macrophages to become activated to go to the infection site in order to begin fighting off disease. Cytokines signal those cells to activate and also produce more cytokines. Too many immune cells and cytokines can block off airways thus causing death. This is probably because good tissue and cells become damaged by the overabundance of cytokines and immune system cells attacking them thus inflaming them, because there is no bacteria associated with the good tissue and cells for the immune cells to destroy so it begins to destroy good tissue and cells. Once this occurs the cells and tissue become damaged because they can no longer absorb oxygen properly and in doing so breathing is restricted.
C- Reactive protien, is a protein in the blood and is used as a marker for inflammation and infection. CRP binds to phosphocholine on microbes and damaged cells to enhance phagocytosis by macrophages. This makes CRP partly responsible for removing necrotic cells. By testing the CRP in a blood test, if the CRP levels are abnormally high this means that there is inflammation present.
There are several herbal remedies and supplements that are able to assist those who feel that they may be susceptible to bacterias and infections that can cause Necrotizing fasciitis. Some herbs are very common such as garlic, sage and thyme. Other herbs and supplements include tea tree oil, turmeric, tulsi and Manuka honey for topical skin problems.
Signal cells that indicate to our immune system cells to stop attacking if there is no infection present do not occur so that the immune system knows the difference between infected cells or pathogens and healthy cells. This occurs with autoimmune diseases; with the exception of Regulatory-T cells that are responsible for stopping the immune system from destruction responses once the pathogens have been removed from the body. Regarding the over production or abundance of cytokines, nettle leaf extract can be used to reduce inflammatory cytokines. And that is the skinny on this topic!
